Gordon Consultants was established in 1989 and provided professional engineering services to principal clients Shell NZ Ltd, Wellington City Council. The National Bank of New Zealand Ltd and architectural and industrial clients. The business was put in recess in 1994 when Stuart joined Connell Wagner (renamed Aurecon in 2009) in its Wellington office as executive responsible for electrical engineering. For the next 18 years Stuart practised in various fields of electrical and industrial engineering, with principal clients in Transpower, ECNZ, Shell NZ Ltd, Tranz-Rail, NZ Defence Force, Fonterra, Wellington City Council, Wellington Water Management (Capacity) Wellington Cablecar Ltd, Marlborough District Council, Constellation, Victoria University of Wellington, Historic Places Trust and various insurance loss adjustor and legal firms in an increasing portfolio of investigative, remedial works management and expert evidence engagements.

In September 2012 Stuart returned to private practice to concentrate on investigative work whilst continuing to provide professional engineering support to former clients and to offer specialised professional engineering services.
